Holiday Gifts from L'Artisan Parfumeur

What smells like heaven on you often ends up in someone else’s ’re-gift’ pile, so as fragrance fanatics, we rarely recommend giving the gift of perfume or cologne for the holidays, unless the recipient specifically asks for it; if you know your giftee-to-be's fave fragrance, so does everyone else. Does anyone really need 12 bottles of their favorite fragrance under the tree? Do not despair…"Scent-a Claus" is here. The Ca Fleure Bon’s Cyber Monday Gift Guide that will surely please even the pickiest perfumistas and discriminating connoisseurs. Tested and approved…all you do is point and click:

Nuit de Tubéreuse Recognized in the "New in Niche: Sniffa Spring Fling Recap" Blog Post!

"M. Duchaufour has been the in-house perfumer at L’Artisan for about a year now and each new release has illuminated another aspect of his artistic vision. In Nuit de Tubereuse he has taken a powerhouse of a note like tuberose and stripped it down without losing the essence of the note. What is left is tuberose that speaks in enticing whispers and beckons you toward the dark side. The notes are cardamom, clove, pink berries, pepper, citrus, tuberose, orange blossom, ylang-ylang, rose, mango, angelica, gorse, sandalwood, pallisander, musk, benzoin and styrax. This is a triumphant piece of perfumery and even if you’ve found tuberose to be too intense for you in the past this is one you should try because M. Duchaufour has domesticated the powerhouse and made it play nice." ---Mark Behnke

Nuit de Tubéreuse Named a Top 10 Summer Fragrance on Now Smell This!

"L’Artisan Parfumeur Nuit de Tubéreuse is definitely part of my summer charmeuse line up. Smelling it is like looking at a Braque painting of a tuberose — you see the composition and at a distance, squinting, it does look like a tuberose, but at the same time it’s a crazy assemblage of pieces that seem like they shouldn’t go together. I tried to resist, but I’m addicted, especially to its truffled dry down."

Get Ready to be Mad....

When People Magazine contacted us last year to tell us that they were interviewing Christina Hendricks from Mad Men and she noted L’Artisan Parfumeur’s Premier Figuier as her favorite perfume, all we could do was blush!

In the New York office of L’Artisan Pafumeur, we were already big fans of Ms. Hendricks and the Mad gang, and while Ms. Hendricks may prefer to wear our perfume out of costume, I personally love the idea of Joan slinking around Sterling Cooper and teasing everyone’s nose with the scent of lush ripe and succulently juicy figs! (Even though I know she most likely was wearing Chanel #5 given that we would not arrive on the scene for at least another decade- this is my Mad Men fantasy…and Don Draper wears L’Eau du Navigateur, but I digress).

Every season has been packed with award winning drama, eye candy, a tub full of martini lunches, and enough cigarettes that I feel like I’ve smoked a pack just from watching it!

And please- a moment of reverence for the clothes….oh the clothes (!) …I hear costume designer Janie Bryant is designing a new clothing line set to debut on QVC.

What new trials await the dapper Don and dames of
Mad Men this season?

A Look at Mad Men Season 4

But more importantly, now that Joan has to go back to work-
will she be able to afford her French perfume?!

Yours,
C.

Nuit de Tubéreuse Wild Posting Campaign & Contest!

As posted earlier, L'Artisan Parfumeur wanted to do something new and exciting for the Nuit de Tubéreuse campaign by getting artist Mike Davis (twelvecarpileup) to create an amazing poster for us!

As part of our Nuit de Tubéreuse campaign, we will have a "wild" posting of our finished poster all over the 5 boroughs of NY!  The purpose of this campaign is to bring the perfume into the streets of NY and the poster even has the graffiti edge to fit in perfectly!

We thought it would also be an exciting idea to do a contest to go along with our "wild" posting campaign!
For all those L'Artisan Parfumeur fans that are located in, or visiting the 5 boroughs, we challenge you to go out and keep your eyes open for our wonderful poster on the streets of NY.  If you happen to see it, take a picture of yourself with the poster and post it onto our Facebook wall!  We will choose 3 random winners by July 6th to receive a bottle of the luminous Nuit de Tubéreuse!

Go out and keep your eyes open for our poster and you could be a WINNER!

A Successful Toast to Nuit de Tubéreuse!

On the evening of June 10, 2010 L’Artisan Parfumeur was proud to host a cocktail party at Aedes De Venustas in New York City for the launch of our newest fragrance creation Nuit de Tubéreuse. The event was also an opportunity to introduce our artwork for the campaign. In the beginning of June we posted a blog about our collaboration with Mike Davis (twelvecarpileup) to create a poster for our Nuit de Tubéreuse campaign. What was really special was if you attended our Aedes De Venustas event and purchased Nuit de Tubéreuse, you received a collectible print of the artwork numbered and signed by the artist. We were so happy to see such a great turnout and so many people interested and loving Nuit de Tubéreuse, overall the evening was a great success!

Nuit de Tubereuse & Graffiti Artist twelvecarpileup

L'Artisan Parfumeur decided to do something different for the launch of our new fragrance: Nuit de Tubereuse.  We collaborated with a US-based graffiti and digital artist, Mike Davis, to design a poster for us.  The inspiration for the image came from every aspect of what the perfume is all about.  Nuit de Tubereuse is a daring and narcotic perfume.  It is the perfume of a luminous and romantic summer evening in Paris intoxicated with bright lights and the vibrating night life.  We wanted Mike to be inspired not only by a these descriptions of the perfume, but the actual fragrance itself, so we gave him a bottle of the perfume to become even more inspired by.

This is the amazing image Mike created:

This unique art will appear globally at all of our boutiques as well as our poster campaign throughout NYC.

A little bit about our artist....

Mike Davis has been a professional graphic designer since 1999 and currently works for Burlesque Design and Screen printing in Minneapolis, MN.  His work is influenced by 1960s-70s design graffiti and street art.  His art influences include: Milton Glaser, Herb Lubalin, Peter Max, Otl Aicher, Saul Bass, Wes Wilson, Alfredo Rostgaard.  Some of Mike's favorite graphic designers that also inspire him are: Steve Harrigton, Geoff McFetridge, Adam Garcia and his colleagues at Burlesque.  Mike's most recent work has been mostly for music posters and album covers.

To learn more about Mike and his projects, watch this video interview:

Deitch Project's Shepard Fairey Exhibit

Thursday after work I stopped by the Deitch Project gallery to see the Shepard Fairey exhibit. Shepard Fairey is a contemporary "street" artist that is most famous for his prints. His most famous piece is the Obama "Hope" poster used during the 2008 Presidential election.

I was really happy I walked over to the exhibit, his use of screen prints and news paper scraps made the art have a lot of depth. His images were mostly political and pop-culture pieces.

Here are some pictures I took while I was there....

Chandler Burr's Scent Dinners

Check out these clips from Chandler Burr's (New York Times' perfume critic) Scent Dinners:

"Collaborating with great chefs, he also hosts interactive Scent Dinners, masterclasses in gourmand scents and a series that takes diners through the structure and artistry of food-based scent raw materials (absolutes of cinnamon, ginger, and vanilla) and the perfumes made from them. Burr creates an invisible 8-course olfactory dinner using gourmand perfumes from Angel (which uses a molecule in cotton candy) and Piment Brûlant (habanero pepper) to Light Blue (lemon + tart green apple) and Shalimar (rich vanilla). The chefs pair Burr's scent dinners with their culinary dinners, each edible course reflecting the gourmand perfume that precedes it. Burr has created his Scent Dinners with chefs Jimmy Sakatos of The Carlyle in New York, Martín Rios in Santa Fe, Samuel Benne of Lapérouse, Paris, Fabrice Guisset at Las Ventanas in Cabo, Mexico, and Vito Mollica, Ex Chef of the Four Seasons, Florence."

Nuit de Tubereuse Receives a Great Review on 1000 Fragrances Blog

"The next big surprise this spring will be a very special perfume from L'Artisan Parfumeur and I'm sure that many will love it because it is a daring creation with an original twist (a mango note on top that is very delicious, then angelica and a lot of pink pepper). Nuit de Tubéreuse is quite different from Serge Lutens or Frédéric Malle type. I know somebody that is already under the magic of this creation since several months and it is the best creation of its author for L'Artisan Parfumeur."

L'Artisan Parfumeur's Nuit de Tubéreuse-Late Spring 2010

Nuit de Tubéreuse

Eau de Parfum

A perfume for a secret Parisian summer night

Parisian summer nights are too romantic to be resisted. The bright lights and vibrating Paris night life are intoxicating, almost hypnotic. They have a kind of transparent grace about them, a secret sensuality, a disturbing magic that electrifies the senses.

With NUIT DE TUBEREUSE, L’Artisan Parfumeur, the daring alchemist, working with master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, offers a new and tender look at tuberose, darling of the night. A contemporary tuberose - a secret, almost narcotic perfume you want to feel on your skin, with an attraction that expresses itself according to the moment and the way it evolves on the skin, in multiple and astonishing ways.

Built around an absolute of tuberose, this magnificent perfume magnifies every single facet of this mysterious, ambivalent flower.

The top note is delicately spicy (a hot and cold bouquet of cardamom, clove absolute, pink berries and pepper) and citrus fruits which turn to velvet beside sweet notes of tender but highly narcotic white flowers (tuberose, orange blossom and ylang-ylang). Rose takes its place in the form of essential oil and absolute to give the floral heart notes warmth and color. Mango gives it that touch of sparkle. An almost mineral vibration that emanates from tuberose root mingles with angelica in an unusual harmony. Gorse absolute strengthens its mellow but slightly tangy aspect. And its base vibrates in concert with an ensemble of rare woods ranging from sandalwood to pallissander, glazed with sensual musks and enveloping balms (benzoin, styrax)

Nuit de Tubéreuse, the perfume of a secret summer night in Paris. A luminous harmony built around the ambivalence of tuberose, pure and innocent, poetic in its exaltation and an almost narcotic sensuality.

A Few Of My Favorite Things!

So, I‘ve been asked time and time again my favorite scents. The smells that I can’t live with out; the ones that I crave. My first experience with being haunted by fragrance was when I was a little girl. My mother had this beautiful grey woolen shawl that she wore almost everyday except when she would go out for a glamorous evening on the town.

After watching the wondrous ritual of her getting ready, I would crawl into her bed and watch the late late shows, usually Alfred Hitchcock or old reruns of the Twilight Zone. Scared silly and desperately clutching the shawl I would breathe in the warm, spicy scent of Yves Saint Laurent's Opium or Paloma Picasso mixed with earthy wool and my mother’s own essence.

This is how I became instantly addicted to perfume. Following my mother’s cue, I immediately fell in to the Classic Orientals much to my family’s dismay… Can you imagine a young girl of eight or nine soaked from head to toe in Opium? A bit much.

So here they are, in no particular ranking…

Garlic:

Mmm.Mmmmmm.Garlic. I mean, how can you not love the smell of Garlic? Something is wrong with you if you don’t love the smell of potently drenched, succulent, dripping with, buttery, yummy, Garlic. There is this restaurant by my office that has a snake of garlic perfume wafting through the air and around the corner. It’s like it some kind of olfactory hook in my nose that just grabs my body.

I often cook heavily with it, and I love the smell of my perfume mixing with the scent. I usually like a really heavy spicy, Oriental with my garlic. This is secretly what I imagine Sophia Loren’s kitchen to smell like. Almost sensory overload.

Freshly Baked Bread:

I remember one summer; I experienced heaven, in of all places, Brooklyn. Nestled amongst the grey warehouses and greasy Hipsters is a huge industrial bakery. On that cool summer night, still under the spell of puppy-love and blushed from wine, I shared a soft kiss. As I inhaled the freshly baked loaves, I sighed, “Hmm…This must be what heaven smells like…” Who knew bread could be so innocently erotic?

Florida Water with Milk& Honey:

Ok. Milk & Honey is just fabulous any way. It even sounds good together and how much more decadent can you get than a Milk & Honey bath?

I don’t mean a bath gel with powdered milk and dehydrated honey in the ingredients. I mean a quart of heavy whipping cream and a fat half cup of honey drizzled into a steaming hot bath. Then I add some sprinkles of Florida water ,which is traditionally reserved for Caribbean rituals, and sink deep into the silky warmth. It’s dizzyingly intoxicating.

Comet brand cleaner:
I know this is weird, but I love the smell of Comet brand cleaner, and it is this particular scent not some off brand scent. Here’s kudos to the industrial fragrance perfumer who created this scent, because this has been a staple in my life for many years solely based on the scent.

I have found myself on my hands and knees diligently scrubbing away in the tiles of my bathroom just to be able to breathe in that compulsively clean and sparkling scent!

So this is a short and sweet list of a few favorite scents that are seared into my olfactory memory, however new contenders find me everyday especially in the streets of New York!

Cheers,

Celene
